Plex Media Server

Plex Media Server organizes personal movies, television, music and other supported media so Plex player apps can browse and stream it. It is for people who maintain their own media collection on a computer or compatible NAS and want library metadata and playback across devices. This package is the server, distinct from the Plex desktop player and Plex HTPC.

Server and library functions

Create libraries pointing to your media folders, scan supported files and retrieve metadata. Serve compatible Plex clients and use the bundled browser-based Plex Web App for administration. When direct playback is not suitable, the server can transcode media to a client-compatible format. Recent Mac releases add hardware tone mapping, hardware subtitle burn-in and AV1 hardware decoding on M3 and newer Macs. These capabilities depend on hardware, format, settings and entitlement; installing the server does not guarantee every codec is accelerated.

Installation and requirements

Download the official macOS ZIP, extract Plex Media Server.app and put it in Applications, or use brew install --cask plex-media-server. Launch the server and use its menu-bar Open Plex command to configure it in a browser. The current official download API and requirements page specify macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later; the downloadable Mac archive is universal. The exact 1.43.4.10903-e5521bd8c ZIP is 151,456,110 bytes, confirmed by its download server. Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and supported NAS builds are separate and have their own requirements.

Plex's requirements page recommends an Intel Core i 3-equivalent processor or faster as a general minimum and says 4 GB RAM is typically sufficient for ordinary installations, while emphasizing that transcoding and concurrent streams can need substantially more resources. This is not a claim that an Intel processor is required for the universal Mac build. Budget additional storage for media, database metadata, artwork and temporary transcoding files. A reachable network and sufficient bandwidth are needed for clients; remote access requires appropriate network configuration.

Accounts, fees and licensing

Setup and normal account-connected library use rely on a Plex account and client access permissions. The server software is available to download free; Plex Pass enables premium features such as supported hardware-accelerated streaming. Remote playback, offline downloads, DVR and other services can have current paid entitlement requirements; consult Plex's plans rather than assuming every feature is free. DVR also depends on compatible tuner hardware and a supported broadcast source. Plex's proprietary terms apply to the server; media and third-party services have separate rights and costs.

Permissions and practical cautions

The server needs access to the media folders and storage used for its database and temporary files. On macOS, protected or removable locations can require corresponding authorization. Do not grant broad unrelated permissions by default; no universal Accessibility or Screen Recording requirement is established in the inspected server documentation. Keep backups of the server data and source media before upgrading. Library removal, file deletion options and changed folder paths can affect your collection, so check settings carefully. Limit sharing to intended users, protect the account and understand any externally reachable server endpoint. Metadata retrieval and account-connected services involve network activity; review Plex's privacy policy.
