Beschreibung
CleanShot X is a macOS screen-capture and recording application for people producing documentation, support images, tutorials and presentations. It combines capture controls, editing and optional sharing so a screenshot or recording can be prepared without moving through several separate tools.
Screenshots and editing
Capture an area, window or screen, use scrolling capture for supported content, and annotate with text, arrows, shapes, counters and highlights. Redaction options include blur, pixelation and solid coverage. Background styling, cropping, resizing and saved presets help prepare consistent visual output. Editable CleanShot files allow later changes rather than flattening everything at the first export.
Capture History lets you retrieve recent screenshots and recordings, while pinning keeps an image visible above other apps. On-device OCR copies text from images and reads QR codes; available recognition languages can depend on the macOS version. Inspect the final exported file when redacting sensitive material instead of assuming a visual blur always removes every underlying copy or editable source.
Recording and Studio Mode
Record screen content with configured audio and optional camera/keystroke presentation. Version 5.0 introduces Studio Mode and a redesigned video editor with smart cursor-following zooms, trimming, smoother cursor movement, motion blur, backgrounds and adjustments after recording. Hardware encoding accelerates exports where supported. These are 5.0 features, not features retrospectively added to every old release.
Installation and requirements
Download the official DMG, copy CleanShot X.app to Applications, or use brew install --cask cleanshot. Current publisher FAQ requires macOS 13 or later; 4.8.10 was the last version supporting Catalina 10.15. The official 5.0.1 DMG is 50,557,562 bytes. Read-only inspection of that exact 5.0.1 artifact confirms macOS 13.0 as the bundle minimum and a Universal main executable with x86_64 and arm64 slices for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
The cask declares no separate Homebrew formula dependency or named conflict. Grant macOS Screen Recording/capture permission when requested for capture. Microphone and camera permissions apply when you choose those inputs, and additional permissions depend on enabled integrations or control features. System audio recording uses the app's current engine; the publisher says newer releases no longer require a separate audio driver. Do not grant unrelated broad permissions simply to make a capture tool work.
License, account and costs
CleanShot is paid, proprietary software licensed per the publisher's terms and device/seat rules. Activate a purchased license using the provided key. The publisher offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, not a general free trial; Setapp has its own availability and trial terms. Consult current pricing for seats, updates and cloud allowances before buying.
A CleanShot Cloud account is supplied with a license but the FAQ explicitly says cloud use is optional and is only used for uploads. Local capture and other app features do not require you to upload an image. License activation, downloads, updates and cloud sharing use the network; OCR is advertised as on-device. The desktop license and cloud retention/storage/sharing terms should be reviewed separately.
Privacy and safe sharing
Screenshots and recordings can reveal passwords, conversations, customer data, notifications, file paths and background applications. Confirm the selected area and audio inputs, hide unnecessary material and review the export before sharing. Capture History and editable source files can retain data after a flattened export; protect local copies as well.
Cloud uploads create remotely hosted copies and shareable links with their own access controls and retention. Use appropriate privacy and link settings, avoid uploading secrets, and understand what collaborators can access. A recording may consume significant disk space and processing time; keep enough free storage for both source and export.
