Cap

Cap records screens, cameras and microphones for product demos, bug reports, tutorials and asynchronous team feedback. Instant Mode uploads while recording for quick share links; Studio Mode keeps a local recording for editing, backgrounds, zooms, captions and export. Its web service adds comments, transcripts and team workflows, with optional own S3-compatible storage or self-hosting.

Installation and requirements

Extract the official Mac app archive and move Cap.app to Applications, or use brew install --cask cap. The exact 0.6.0 Cap.app.tar.gz is 192,430,073 bytes. Static inspection of this exact archive confirms app version 0.6.0, an Apple Silicon arm64 application executable and a macOS 12.3 bundle minimum, matching the tagged desktop configuration. The publisher offers separate Apple Silicon and Intel downloads; the tagged release workflow builds both aarch64-apple-darwin and x86_64-apple-darwin, but the Intel build is not this catalog archive. No fixed RAM minimum is published. Inspecting the main executable does not establish all optional feature or external-service dependencies. Recording and export need free storage, and high-resolution camera effects or long projects can use substantial memory.

Capture permissions and network

Allow Screen Recording for screen/window capture, Microphone when recording audio and Camera when including a webcam. Check the selected target and audio meters before recording; notifications, passwords and other people's information can appear in captured video. The publisher's normal onboarding uses an account. Cloud sharing and Instant Mode need a signed-in service and network connection, whereas Studio recordings can remain local. Self-hosting requires a separately administered web/API/database/storage environment, not just the Mac app.

Costs, license and data ownership

The repository uses AGPLv3 for most code, MIT for the named cap-camera/scap crate families and third-party licenses for their components. The publisher separately offers commercial desktop rights and cloud plans; open-source availability is not a promise that every hosted feature or commercial license is free. Review current pricing, storage limits and your license obligations. Own-bucket storage still has that provider's costs and permissions; private links, passwords and self-hosting are choices to configure, not automatic protection for every recording.

Practical limits

Recovering interrupted recordings does not replace backups. Keep original footage until exports are checked for sound, sync and completeness, and review diagnostic reports before sending them. Optional GPUI native preview tools in 0.6.0 are experimental and can be switched back; they do not imply every existing workflow is already supported there. The official README product image illustrates recording controls and web editing, not the exact release layout.
