OpenNavo: free, open-source local scanning

OpenNavo is our own Mac app: a Homebrew app manager with ClamAV-based virus scanning. It supports quick, full and scheduled scans, checks downloads and scans Homebrew packages before installation. Scanning runs locally without uploading files. Signature, notarization and startup-item checks complement the scanner. It supports macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon and Intel. ClamAV has limited coverage of Mac-specific malware; this supplements rather than replaces macOS protections. This is not a claim of protection equivalent to the other products.

Three additional options

Need to check suspicious files or add malware protection to your Mac? These three apps offer different approaches. Malwarebytes provides manual scans, with real-time protection available on paid plans. ESET Cyber Security is a security app with web and email protection. ClamXAV offers file and disk scans, scheduled scans and background checking.

Choose one that fits your workflow; installing all three is not the goal. Homebrew installation does not grant a paid licence. Check each app’s current macOS requirements, plan and permissions before installing. No scanner guarantees detection of every threat; keep macOS and backups up to date. This is a curated selection, not a detection-rate or performance benchmark.
