About

Writer is a free, open-source Markdown editor for people who keep their notes and documents in local workspaces. Documents stay on your computer.

  • Write extended Markdown with tables, HTML and Mermaid diagrams.
  • Open multiple workspace windows and switch between them.
  • Keep YAML frontmatter alongside your document content.

The current Homebrew cask supplies the Apple Silicon macOS build. Install with brew install --cask writer. The official site labels the app as beta.

Uninstall Writer and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask writer

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Deep clean (optional)

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask writer

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.
