About

VirtualC64 is a macOS application that emulates the Commodore 64, with cycle-accurate operation and particular emphasis on PAL accuracy. It also supports NTSC emulation.

  • Import C64 disk and program files in D64, T64, PRG, P00, and G64 formats, as well as TAP tape images and CRT cartridges.
  • Use joystick input through keyboard emulation or a USB controller; the project also describes support for selected controllers and an adapter for original Commodore joysticks.
  • On first launch, the emulator prompts you to add four ROM images. The official site notes that these are not preinstalled because of their unclear copyright status. It also describes free Mega65-project ROM replacements that ship with the emulator and can be installed from the ROM configuration panel.

Install with brew install --cask virtualc64. The cask requires macOS 13 or later and installs VirtualC64.app in /Applications. After installation, launch the app and follow its prompt to configure ROM images. VirtualC64 is open-source software; the official site identifies the GNU General Public License for the project and the MIT license for the CPU core.
