About

TaskExplorer is a macOS application for exploring running processes and the resources associated with them. Its process view updates as processes start and exit, and presents information about each process, including its code-signing status.

  • Inspect a selected process’s loaded dylibs, open files, and network connections, with details available in an inspector pane.
  • Filter processes and related items, including searches for network activity, listening sockets, and other supported categories.
  • Export process and related data as JSON, either from the app or through its command-line interface.
  • Optionally check binary hashes with VirusTotal or ask the built-in assistant about TaskExplorer’s live data. Assistant providers and data handling differ: Apple Intelligence runs on-device; using Claude or ChatGPT requires your own API key and sends queried information to the selected provider.

Requires macOS 14 or later. TaskExplorer uses an Endpoint Security system extension; macOS requires approval for the extension and Full Disk Access. Install with brew install --cask taskexplorer, then open the app and follow its permission prompts. The command-line interface also requires launching the app once so the extension can be installed and approved.
