About

Sononym is a standalone audio sample browser for sound designers and music producers. It analyzes audio descriptors such as brightness, crest factor and timbre, then lets you search, filter and sort a local sample collection. Similarity search can use an existing sample or live recording to discover related sounds. Machine learning categorizes samples and distinguishes loops from one-shots; duplicate detection also finds nearly identical sounds. Projects bookmark, organize and export selected samples. The application works offline and does not upload your samples.

Setup and requirements

Install with brew install --cask sononym, or mount the official DMG and drag Sononym to Applications. Open the app and add your sample folders for analysis. The current Apple Silicon build requires macOS 11 or later; the Intel build requires macOS 10.13 or later. Recommended hardware: 2+ GHz CPU, 4+ GB RAM and fast storage, preferably an SSD. A fully functional 30-day trial is available; continued use requires a license. Preferences and logs are stored under ~/Library/Application Support/Sononym; projects and recorded/cropped audio normally use ~/Documents/Sononym.
