About

SnowSQL is Snowflake's legacy command-line client for executing SQL queries and performing DDL and DML operations, including loading data into and unloading data out of tables. It runs in a terminal rather than as a standalone Mac graphical application.

Interactive and batch workflows

Use SnowSQL as an interactive shell, pass SQL through standard input, or execute a script with the -f option. The client is built using the Snowflake Connector for Python, but the connector is not a separate installation prerequisite: the required software is bundled with the installer. Connection and configuration documentation describes how to connect the client to a Snowflake account.

macOS distribution

The Homebrew cask records SnowSQL 1.5.2 and distributes an official Apple-silicon PKG installer, with a separate Intel artifact. The default configuration file is ~/.snowsql/config; the official installation guide describes changing the workspace and download directory. Its current top-level guidance says automatic upgrades have been disabled since 1.3.0, so download and reinstall new versions rather than relying on older auto-upgrade examples elsewhere in the guide.

Maintenance and migration

Snowflake recommends Snowflake CLI for new installations and new work, and says new features and enhancements will only be added to Snowflake CLI. SnowSQL 1.5.x remains supported through April 16, 2028 according to the official support table. Snowflake CLI and the VS Code extension are separate products, not graphical interfaces installed by this cask.

Version 1.5.2 upgrades the bundled Python connector to 4.7.3 and removes SQLite from the installation bundle. No public SnowSQL source-code repository is identified by the official product and installation documentation; the Python connector repository is not substituted as the application's repository.
