About

SF Symbols is Apple’s desktop library and design tool for developers and interface designers building apps on Apple platforms. The current product page describes more than 7,000 symbols in nine weights and three scales, with text alignment, localized designs and support for custom vector symbols.

Browse and design

Search for symbols, compare their weights and rendering, and export supported vector artwork for your app’s design workflow. Apple describes semantic search, monochrome, hierarchical, palette and multicolor rendering, and configurable animation. Custom-symbol annotation controls drawing direction, timing and behavior across weights. Feature and symbol availability depend on the selected SF Symbols release and your app’s deployment OS; a symbol visible in the desktop browser may be unavailable on an older target device.

Installation and compatibility

The current catalog points to Apple’s SF-Symbols-27.dmg, an official 445,052,983-byte download. It contains a package installer, so follow Apple’s installer workflow rather than treating the DMG as an app bundle to copy. brew install --cask sf-symbols is an alternative installation route; the cask has older distributions for some older macOS releases and can therefore select a different version.

Apple’s public product and design-resources pages state macOS Sonoma 14 or later for the tool. The current 27 package’s payload CPU architecture and executable minimum have not been independently inspected; the general page requirement is not a claim that every current distribution supports every Sonoma Mac. Apple lists the new symbols’ app deployment availability separately as OS 27 across its platforms. This is different from the desktop tool’s installation requirement. Xcode and a compatible Apple SDK are needed to integrate platform symbols into an app, rather than to prove that a symbol will run on every old SDK.

Access, permissions and costs

Apple offers the public download without a purchase price on the linked page. Browsing or editing locally is distinct from membership in the Apple Developer Program, App Store distribution and any related fees. Network access is needed to download the installer and obtain updates or documentation. File access is needed for selected custom-symbol imports and exports; these workflows do not justify granting all macOS privacy permissions. No additional Homebrew formula dependency is declared for the current package.

License and safe use

SF Symbols and Apple’s supplied artwork are proprietary Apple resources. Availability for download does not grant unrestricted rights to reuse Apple trademarks, restricted symbols or system artwork. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines explicitly prohibit using SF Symbols or confusingly similar images in app icons, logos or other trademarked uses. Symbols depicting Apple products or features must not be customized; the app’s Info badge and inspector identify their usage restrictions. Review Apple’s applicable resource agreement and these symbol-specific restrictions before distribution. The exact agreement bundled with this current installer has not been independently extracted; no open-source license or unrestricted commercial-artwork permission is asserted.

Check rendering, accessibility labels, right-to-left behavior and fallback symbols on each supported target OS. Keep editable originals before overwriting custom SVG files. A screenshot or exported reference sheet can include your unreleased designs, so review its contents before sharing it. Use the platform’s supported symbol APIs and availability checks instead of assuming a desktop preview establishes runtime compatibility.

Release evidence

Apple’s current overview is a feature description, while its linked video still discusses SF Symbols 7. Specific change lists for the catalog’s latest distinct 27.0,8.0 and 7.2 releases were not established from these pages. Existing features are not relabeled as three new releases, and duplicate build/base catalog entries are not counted as separate versions.
