How to install SeKey on Mac

  1. In Terminal, run: brew install --cask sekey
  2. Homebrew runs the SeKey-0.1.pkg installer, which asks for an administrator password.

Caveats

Append the following line to your ~/.bash_profile or ~/.zshrc:

  export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$HOME/.sekey/ssh-agent.ssh

then source the file to update your current session.

Install without Homebrew

Download the same file Homebrew uses: github.com/sekey/sekey/releases/download/0.1/SeKey-0.1.pkg

SHA-256 only checks that the download is complete; it is not a security certification. See the SHA-256 and download address

Uninstall SeKey and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask sekey

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Uninstalling also removes

Background services (launchctl)
com.ntrippar.sekey
Installer receipts (pkgutil)
com.ntrippar.sekey

Deep clean (optional)

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask sekey

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.

Files SeKey can leave on your Mac (1)

Questions about SeKey

Is SeKey safe?

Homebrew has disabled SeKey (it is no longer maintained), so it can no longer be installed with Homebrew. It was disabled on May 27.

Is SeKey open source?

SeKey’s source code is public on GitHub (sekey/sekey) under the MIT license.

How do I completely uninstall SeKey on a Mac?

Run brew uninstall --cask sekey. It stops 1 background service and forgets 1 installer receipt. To delete its settings and caches as well, run brew uninstall --zap --cask sekey. --zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap. That also deletes ~/.sekey.

Does SeKey run on Apple silicon (M1 and later) Macs?

Homebrew installs it on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, from the same download.

Where does SeKey store its settings and data?

Its data is in ~/.sekey. These locations come from Homebrew’s clean-up list.

What is the latest version of SeKey?

The latest version is 0.1, added to Homebrew on Jan 5, 2018. Run brew upgrade --cask sekey to update it.

What else does installing SeKey add?

It also adds 1 command-line tool: sekey. It installs through a .pkg installer, which asks for an administrator password.
