About

Peel is a free, open-source macOS uninstaller and cleaner. It finds files associated with an app and explains each match using evidence such as its bundle identifier, signing team or a Homebrew cask. Review the results before choosing what to move to the Trash; files shared with another app are shown but not selected automatically.

Removal and recovery

Choose an app in Peel, drop it on the Dock icon, or enable its Finder extension for a context-menu action. Peel can also reset an app's settings without uninstalling it. History can restore moved files while they remain in the Trash. This is not a guarantee that every action is reversible: the publisher identifies exceptions, including Homebrew's own uninstall, before confirmation. Keep independent backups of important data.

Other tools

The app includes disk-space and orphaned-file views, app-update checks, Homebrew management, macOS settings and Terminal customization. Its bundled command-line tool supports previewing file-moving operations with --dry-run. Optional actions and update checks can use the network; the official privacy page describes these connections.

Mac requirements

The official website requires macOS Tahoe 26 or later, on Apple silicon or the Intel Macs that macOS 26 supports. The publisher states that Peel is signed and notarized by Apple. Full Disk Access is required for some features, including watching for apps moved to the Trash; review permissions before enabling them.

Official product and installation information. Features and requirements above are based on the publisher's current website, not an independent execution or security audit.

Uninstall Peel and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask peel

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Uninstalling also removes

Login items
Peel

Deep clean (optional)

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask peel

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.

Questions about Peel

Is Peel safe?

Peel is in Homebrew’s official catalog and has not been disabled. Since September 2026, Homebrew disables apps that fail macOS Gatekeeper checks. When installing, Homebrew checks the download from github.com against its SHA-256 checksum.

Is Peel open source?

Peel’s source code is public on GitHub (TuguiDragos/Peel) under the GPL-3.0 license.

How do I completely uninstall Peel on a Mac?

Run brew uninstall --cask peel. It quits the app and removes 1 login item. To delete its settings and caches as well, run brew uninstall --zap --cask peel. --zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap. That also deletes 13 files and folders, including ~/Library/Application Support/Peel.

Does Peel run on Apple silicon (M1 and later) Macs?

Homebrew installs it on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, from the same download. It needs macOS 26 or later.

Where does Peel store its settings and data?

Its settings are in ~/Library/Preferences/com.tuguidragos.Peel.plist. Its data is in ~/Library/Application Support/Peel and ~/Library/Containers/com.tuguidragos.Peel.FinderExtension. These locations come from Homebrew’s clean-up list.

What is the latest version of Peel?

The latest version is 1.2.1, added to Homebrew on Oct 25, 2026. Peel updates itself; to update it with Homebrew, run brew upgrade --cask --greedy peel.

What else does installing Peel add?

It also adds 1 command-line tool: peel.
