How to install OSXFUSE on Mac

  1. In Terminal, run: brew install --cask osxfuse
  2. Homebrew runs the Extras/FUSE for macOS 3.11.2.pkg installer, which asks for an administrator password.

Caveats

osxfuse requires a kernel extension to work.
If the installation fails, retry after you enable it in:
System Settings → Privacy & Security

For more information, refer to vendor documentation or this Apple Technical Note:
  https://developer.apple.com/library/content/technotes/tn2459/_index.html

You must reboot for the installation of osxfuse to take effect.

Install without Homebrew

Download the same file Homebrew uses: github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/releases/download/osxfuse-3.11.2/osxfuse-3.11.2.dmg

SHA-256 only checks that the download is complete; it is not a security certification. See the SHA-256 and download address

Uninstall OSXFUSE and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask osxfuse

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Deep clean (optional)

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask osxfuse

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.

Questions about OSXFUSE

Is OSXFUSE safe?

Homebrew has disabled OSXFUSE (its developer discontinued it), so it can no longer be installed with Homebrew. It was disabled on Mar 28, 2026.

How do I completely uninstall OSXFUSE on a Mac?

Run brew uninstall --cask osxfuse. It forgets 3 installer receipts and unloads 1 kernel extension. To delete its settings and caches as well, run brew uninstall --zap --cask osxfuse. --zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap. That also deletes ~/Library/Caches/com.github.osxfuse.OSXFUSEPrefPane.

Does OSXFUSE run on Apple silicon (M1 and later) Macs?

Homebrew installs it on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, from the same download.

What is the latest version of OSXFUSE?

The latest version is 3.11.2, added to Homebrew on Oct 5, 2020. Run brew upgrade --cask osxfuse to update it.

What else does installing OSXFUSE add?

It installs through a .pkg installer, which asks for an administrator password.
