About
OpenPencil by ZSeven-W is a free, MIT-licensed vector design tool for designers and developers who want to turn prompts into editable interfaces. This is ZSeven-W/openpencil, not the separate open-pencil/open-pencil project.
Design and automation
Work on an infinite canvas with vector shapes, text, frames, auto layout, reusable components and design variables. AI generation can stream editable designs onto the canvas; concurrent agent teams can work on separate sections. JSON-based .op documents are readable and suitable for version control. The built-in MCP server and op CLI let compatible coding agents inspect and modify designs. Import Figma .fig files and export images/PDF or code for React + Tailwind, HTML + CSS and other supported frameworks. Check imported layouts and generated code before production use; no conversion-fidelity guarantee is implied.
Mac installation and maturity
The latest listed GitHub release checked was v0.8.4, explicitly marked prerelease, with separate arm64 and x64 DMG files for Apple silicon and Intel. Open the official Releases page, select the correct Mac DMG and move OpenPencil.app to Applications. The official tap also offers brew install --cask zseven-w/; the checked tap currently declares 0.8.2, not 0.8.4. Do not confuse it with the unrelated core Homebrew cask. The Rust desktop app does not bundle Electron. A reliable minimum macOS version was not established from the inspected release/configuration sources; check the chosen build before installing on an older Mac. Signing/notarization was not independently verified. To uninstall, quit and remove the app; back up .op documents before removing any local settings.
AI, accounts and costs
The editor is free and open source, but connected AI services are not promised free. Configure a supported provider/API key or an authenticated external agent as required by that integration; provider accounts, quotas, subscriptions and usage charges are separate. Networked AI sends relevant prompts/context to the selected service. Local editing is distinct from networked AI, external assets and collaboration. Official documentation says LAN collaboration needs no account; hosted hub/multi-tenant features use authentication. Review provider data policies and agent permissions before sharing private designs.
