Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer
Microsoft Corporation · Microsoft’s desktop tool for browsing and managing Azure storage resources, transferring data and connecting through supported account or resource credentials.
About
Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer is a standalone desktop application for developers and administrators working with Azure storage. It provides a resource tree, data views and transfer activities for supported blobs, ADLS Gen 2 resources, file shares, tables and queues. Available actions depend on the resource type, Azure permissions and the selected connection method.
Resource and transfer workflows
Browse storage resources, upload and download supported data, copy blobs, inspect properties and manage authorized operations. Sign in to an Azure account to discover subscriptions, or attach an individual resource using a supported Entra ID, SAS or key-based route. AzCopy is bundled for relevant data transfers. A desktop view does not bypass a storage account’s access policy, encryption, firewall or data-layer authorization.
Local emulators such as Azurite can be attached when configured correctly. Emulation, Docker or Podman are optional workflows, not mandatory components for every Azure connection. Platform-specific release features must be checked separately; an NFS operation labeled Linux-only is not presented as a Mac capability.
Installation and Mac requirements
The official StorageExplorer-darwin-arm64.zip for 1.46.0 is 303,604,509 bytes. Read-only inspection confirms version 1.46.0, an arm64 executable and LSMinimumSystemVersion 12.0. This selected build requires an Apple-silicon Mac and the current bundle’s macOS 12 minimum; it is not a Universal Intel download.
Microsoft’s general setup article still lists macOS 10.15 and later and separate Intel and ARM downloads. That general listing does not override the inspected current Electron-based app’s 12.0 minimum. Select the matching publisher architecture rather than assuming a current ARM package runs on an old Intel Mac. Extract the ZIP and follow the publisher’s Mac installation workflow, or use brew install --cask microsoft-azure-storage-explorer.
The current official setup documentation requires a .NET 10 runtime matching the Storage Explorer architecture for releases starting at 1.42.0. Keep that runtime updated. The app package and .NET runtime have separate compatibility requirements; the Mac ZIP is not asserted to install every runtime automatically. A missing cask formula dependency is not evidence that the publisher’s .NET requirement disappeared.
Accounts, permissions and network
Azure sign-in requires the applicable account and network access. Full resource discovery and data access can require both management-layer and data-layer permissions; resource attachment can be appropriate when an account has only the latter. Organization policy, MFA and storage networking rules can restrict operations. A SAS token is scoped and can expire; possession of a token does not imply permission to perform every command.
Local upload and download workflows need access to selected files and destinations. Account secrets and credentials use system authentication facilities. Do not grant unrelated macOS privacy permissions as a substitute for the required Azure permissions. Uploads, downloads, copy jobs and updates use network bandwidth; Azure storage, transactions and transfer charges remain separate from the desktop tool.
License, cost and data risks
Storage Explorer is a free Microsoft desktop tool governed by its bundled Microsoft software license terms. The inspected EULA grants use on your devices for developing, testing and demonstrating applications, reserves other rights and restricts redistribution or hosted provision. Its public feedback/documentation repository’s Creative Commons license is not the application’s license. Open-source third-party components have separate notices.
Microsoft’s EULA describes collection of operational information and refers to its privacy statement. Review telemetry and account policies before using confidential data. SAS URLs, account keys, copied commands and diagnostic logs can expose powerful credentials; redact them before sharing support reports.
Deletion, overwriting, access-control changes and storage-tier operations can affect production data or costs. Confirm the account, container, path and operation before applying changes, and maintain independent recovery and retention safeguards. A successful transfer activity is not a complete backup policy. Review downloads and exports for confidential information before moving them outside the authorized environment.
