About

macSKK is a Japanese input method for macOS based on the SKK method. It is designed for users who want to enter Japanese using an SKK-style workflow.

  • Supports multiple dictionaries, private mode that does not save entries to the personal dictionary, and input completion based on previous entries.
  • Offers configurable keyboard layouts, romaji-to-kana conversion rules, and key bindings. It also supports numeric conversion and SKKServ as a dictionary source.
  • Includes per-application settings for direct input, plus workarounds for some applications that use xterm.js.
  • Uses macOS App Sandbox mechanisms to limit network and file access. The project describes the application as written in Swift, using Combine for event handling and SwiftUI for its interface.

Install with brew install --cask macskk. The package requires macOS 13 or later; the project specifies macOS 13.3 or later. After installation, add an input source such as ひらがな in System Settings under Keyboard. See the project documentation for setup details and dictionary instructions.

The project states that its Universal Binary is built for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, but that testing has been performed only on Apple Silicon. Its documentation also notes that input may not work in some Java AWT applications.
