About

LanguageTool for Desktop brings writing suggestions to supported macOS apps. It can identify spelling and grammar issues, punctuation problems, incorrect capitalization, and style concerns such as redundant or overused wording. LanguageTool’s site lists Pages, Mail, Slack, Word, Notes, and Messages among the apps supported on macOS.

The service checks writing in multiple languages and dialects; its site highlights English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Dutch, among others. The desktop app is intended to offer suggestions within writing apps rather than being a separate font or a command-line tool. LanguageTool’s broader service has free and Premium offerings; available checking features may differ between them.

Install the desktop app with Homebrew Cask:

brew install --cask languagetool-desktop

Requires macOS 12 or later. The cask installs LanguageTool for Desktop.app in /Applications. After installation, open the app and use it while writing in a supported application.

  • Provides spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and style suggestions.
  • Supports use across multiple writing apps on macOS, including the apps listed above.
