Kap
Wulkano / Kap contributors · An open-source macOS screen recorder with menu-bar capture controls, recording pause/resume and a plugin system.
About
Kap is an open-source macOS screen recorder maintained by Wulkano and contributors. Built with web technology, it offers a menu-bar workflow for recording a selected portion of the screen. The official project distributes separate Apple-silicon and Intel builds; this Homebrew entry defaults to the Apple-silicon DMG.
Recording workflow
Click the menu-bar icon to open the recorder, select the portion of the screen to capture and press the record button. Click the menu-bar icon again to stop. Version 3.6.0 adds recording pause and resume: Option-click the icon while recording, or right-click for more options. These controls are documented by both the official README and the exact-version release.
Extensibility
Kap includes a plugin system, with dedicated developer documentation in its source repository. Users and developers can consult that documentation for supported extension points rather than assuming every third-party service is bundled with the application.
Installation and distribution
Install with brew install --cask kap, or use the official website's architecture-specific download. This listing records Kap 3.6.0, not an unverified newer release. Development builds are offered separately; the project explicitly warns that those builds are unsupported and may have issues. The source repository, contribution guide and issue tracker are public.
