Jellyfin Media Player
Jellyfin contributors · An open-source Jellyfin desktop client that combines the server web interface with embedded MPV playback and supported audio passthrough.
Jellyfin Media Player is a Audio & Video app for Mac. It needs macOS 12 or later.
About
Jellyfin Media Player is a desktop client for a Jellyfin media server. It suits people who want the server's familiar browsing interface with embedded MPV playback in the same application window. It is not the Jellyfin Server and does not host or supply a media library by itself.
Browsing and playback
Connect to a server, sign into the appropriate Jellyfin user and browse the libraries that user can access. Playback, subtitles and audio passthrough depend on the media, MPV capabilities, output device and server configuration. Some content can require server-side transcoding; installing a client does not eliminate every server CPU or codec requirement.
The 1.11 line switches to the server-provided web client so web-interface updates can take effect without a new desktop release. A server update can therefore change the visible interface independently of the desktop version. Version 1.12 removes an obsolete third-party skip-intro integration; this does not disable every intro-related capability a newer server or other client may provide.
Installation and selected package
Download the official 1.12.0 Apple silicon DMG, copy the app into Applications, or use brew install --cask jellyfin-media-player. The checked DMG is 186,166,526 bytes. The release-tag README states macOS 14 or later for the Apple silicon build and separate Intel build requirements. The selected filename identifies the Apple silicon distribution; it is not evidence of a Universal executable. Read-only inspection confirms version 1.12.0 and an arm64-only executable. Its Info.plist carries an older 10.9 minimum label; the main executable load command declares macOS 11.0, while the release-tag Apple silicon support requirement is 14 or later. These metadata values do not establish that the complete application and its dependencies support 10.9 or 11.0.
The cask declares no extra formula dependency. The packaged app includes its player components; Linux source-build dependencies in the README are not automatic Mac runtime prerequisites. A separate Jellyfin server and accessible library are required. This catalog entry remains the 1.12 Media Player line; the publisher's newer 2.0 Jellyfin Desktop rename, Qt 6 migration and non-migrating settings should not be presented as 1.12 changes.
Network, accounts and permissions
You need a Jellyfin server address and a user authorized by that server. No separate paid Jellyfin cloud account or hosted content subscription is included. Local-network use still involves network access to the server. Remote access requires a deliberately configured secure connection and may depend on VPN, certificates or the administrator's reverse proxy.
The player needs permission to contact the chosen server and may use macOS local-network authorization. Access to local files is relevant when you deliberately open or export them. Ordinary playback does not require blanket microphone, camera, Accessibility or Full Disk Access permissions. Device-specific audio settings and passthrough support depend on the output configuration.
License and data risks
The project repository identifies GPL 2.0 licensing; bundled player and interface components have their own notices. Jellyfin is free and open-source software, but hosting, storage, hardware, network service and lawful access to media can cost money. The app does not grant rights to copy or distribute a film or recording.
Server addresses, credentials, viewing history and diagnostic logs can expose private information. Use a trusted server, avoid publishing tokens or passwords and review logs before sharing them. Back up relevant client configuration before major migrations. A connectivity failure can cause a new login prompt; ensure you are signing into the intended server rather than an unexpected endpoint. Server-delivered web content is part of the trust boundary, and keeping both client and server updated matters.
