About

Hermes Agent Desktop is Nous Research's graphical desktop interface for Hermes Agent. It brings agent conversations, project files, previews, settings and automation management into an application window. It suits developers, researchers and people who want an extensible agent workspace without using a terminal for every interaction.

A desktop interface to the same agent

Desktop uses the same agent core, configuration, API keys, sessions, skills and memory as the Hermes CLI and messaging gateway. It is distinct from the terminal CLI/TUI and the browser-based Web Dashboard. Existing Hermes users can launch the desktop interface against their configured installation; this Cask installs Hermes.app rather than merely adding a terminal command.

The interface supports streaming chat and visible tool activity, multiple conversations, project file browsing, side-by-side file and web previews, and graphical provider/model/tool settings. Bot Mode organizes named agent profiles and group conversations. Skills retain reusable procedures, memory carries context across sessions, and plugins can add tools, hooks, themes and integrations. Available functions depend on the installed agent version and enabled tools; the app does not guarantee that generated work is correct.

Installation and platform requirements

Install the hermes-desktop Homebrew Cask or obtain the Mac installer from the official desktop page. The recorded download is Hermes-Setup.dmg with build 088d292d364f for agent version 0.21.2. This bootstrap installer is Apple Silicon arm64 only. An Intel Mac must use an appropriate separately provided darwin-x64 bundle or the documented source/CLI desktop route; this specific DMG should not be treated as universal.

The product page lists macOS 12 or later and Windows 10/11. The source project also supports Linux desktop builds, while the public Linux download link routes to terminal installation. Use platform-specific installation documentation instead of assuming the Mac Cask installs Windows or Linux components. The Cask does not declare a numeric macOS minimum or extra dependencies; the official platform requirement is the relevant guide.

The official recorded DMG is 6,752,854 bytes according to HTTP HEAD. It is a bootstrap transfer, not the full agent/runtime download or installed disk footprint. Local setup requires network access to prepare the agent and supported runtime components. Current fully bundled distributions and source/bootstrap installations have different packaging and update ownership. Follow the updater for the installation you actually use rather than replacing a bundled payload with a source-checkout update command.

Models, accounts and costs

No account is needed to run the base desktop app. Choose and configure a supported model provider or endpoint for inference; cloud providers generally require credentials and may charge for model usage. Local or self-hosted inference needs a suitable running endpoint and its own hardware/resources. Downloading a free app does not include unlimited hosted models, search, image generation, speech or cloud-agent runtime.

Signing in to Nous Portal adds its supported cloud agents, model access and tool credits under the applicable free tier or subscription. These service terms and quotas are separate from the desktop application's license. Other providers and integrations have their own accounts, billing and availability. Voice functions may require microphone permission and speech services depending on configuration.

Tools and privacy

The agent can read and change files and run commands through enabled tools and the selected backend. A local backend operates with the user's local access; a remote gateway operates on its host. Grant filesystem, Accessibility, Automation or screen-capture permissions only for the features you intend to use. Review command approvals and any setting that bypasses them. Plugins, skills and external MCP servers extend the agent's capabilities and should come from sources you trust.

Conversations, memory and settings persist across sessions. Prompts, attached files and tool results can be sent to the selected model provider or integration, so privacy depends on those services and the configured backend. A desktop interface does not imply that all inference stays on the Mac. Protect provider credentials and review sensitive material before attaching or sharing it.

License

Nous Research describes Hermes Desktop as free, open source and MIT licensed. The core software has no compulsory paid desktop license. Hosted services, third-party plugins and model providers have separate terms and charges.
