About

Frappe Books is bookkeeping software intended for small businesses and freelancers. The current product runs on the Frappe Framework and is installed on your own server for access through a web browser. The macOS Homebrew cask, however, installs the separate desktop app, which Frappe says is no longer supported; it should not be confused with the current server-based product.

The official product site describes capabilities of the current server-based product, including:

  • Preparing quotes and converting them into invoices, recording payments, and handling bills, supplier payments, and returns.
  • Managing inventory across locations, including batches, expiry dates, and serial numbers, and using a Point of Sale with barcode scanning.
  • Maintaining double-entry accounts and viewing reports such as Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, General Ledger, and Trial Balance.

To install the macOS desktop cask, run brew install --cask frappe-books. The cask installs Frappe Books.app in /Applications. The official site states that the older desktop app is no longer supported; its feature set should not be assumed to match the current server-based product.
