Forel
lab421 · Open-source macOS file automation with folder watching, configurable rules and on-device OCR.
About
Forel is a native Swift menu-bar app that organizes files using rules. Match names, extensions, kinds, sizes, dates, tags, color labels or file contents; move, copy, rename, tag or process files with scripts. Content matching and OCR run locally on your Mac rather than uploading files to a processing service. Configured destinations and scripts can still use network volumes. Preview with Dry Run, process existing files with Run Now, and review history with Undo for supported actions. Scripts cannot be undone.
Installation
Requires macOS 13 Ventura or later; the official DMG is universal for Apple Silicon and Intel. With Homebrew installed, run brew install --cask forel (the current homebrew/cask package). The developer also documents brew install --cask lab421/tap/forel. Alternatively, download the official DMG, open it and drag Forel to Applications. Launch Forel, add a watched folder, create conditions and actions, and use Dry Run before enabling automatic watching. The release is Developer ID signed and notarized. Source code: GPL-3.0-or-later; branding is separately protected.
