About

Amethyst is a desktop client for Nostr, a network built around relays and protocol events. This Homebrew cask installs the macOS Apple Silicon build as Amethyst.app; it is not the Android edition or a general-purpose installer for other platforms.

The client supports a broad set of Nostr capabilities, including text notes and threads, reposts, reactions, long-form content, and public and private messaging. It also supports relay-related functions such as relay discovery, authentication, and management. Other documented features include multiple accounts, Markdown, hashtag following, QR login, media previews, and Lightning tips. Support spans many Nostr Improvement Proposals (NIPs); individual features may follow different NIPs and drafts.

To install, run brew install --cask amethyst-nostr. The cask downloads and places Amethyst.app in /Applications. It requires a 64-bit Apple Silicon Mac and conflicts with the separate amethyst cask, so both casks cannot be installed together.

Nostr relays can see information such as your IP address, public key, contacts, and public activity. Content shared on Nostr may be redistributed and should be treated as potentially permanent. These are characteristics of using the network, not a promise that a post can be removed everywhere.
