1Password
AgileBits Inc. (1Password) · Password and passkey manager for securely organizing logins, payment cards, notes and shared vaults, with Mac Autofill and optional developer integrations.
About
1Password is a password and passkey manager for individuals, families and organizations. The Mac app organizes logins, payment cards, secure notes and other sensitive items in account vaults, with access across supported devices. This cask installs the desktop application; the browser extension and 1Password CLI are separate components.
Main features
- Create, edit, search and organize secure items in vaults.
- Generate passwords and fill supported logins, payment information and passkeys.
- Use Quick Access and supported macOS Autofill integrations for apps and websites.
- Share selected item copies using time-limited links or collaborate through shared vaults under your account plan.
- Review password-health information with Watchtower.
- Configure optional SSH-agent, CLI, SDK and developer-environment integrations separately.
Installation and first use
Install brew install --cask 1password, open1Password.app and add your1Password account. Standard account setup uses your sign-in address and account credentials, including the Secret Key where applicable; organizational SSO and supported account-add flows can differ. Keep account recovery information secure. Enable the desired Autofill or browser integration and review unlock settings. Browser extensions require separate installation; the CLI is the separate1password-cli cask.
Requirements, dependencies and conflicts
The official Mac requirement and Homebrew cask are macOS Monterey12 or later. Separate native Apple Silicon and Intel downloads are available. Native macOS Autofill requires macOS14 or later; biometric/Apple Watch unlock also depends on compatible hardware and feature-specific requirements. Homebrew declares no additional formula dependency or explicit cask conflict. Other password managers may coexist, but competing Autofill providers and browser extensions can affect which suggestions appear. Do not delete an older installation or vault data before confirming migration and account access.
The browser extension has its own requirements: the current support page lists Chrome/Firefox/Edge140+, Brave1.82+, or Safari18.6+ on macOS13+. These are distinct from the Mac app's12+ baseline and can change. No universal RAM/storage minimum is specified in that page; local vault caches, attachments and usage affect storage needs.
Other platforms
1Password8 also supports64-bit Windows10+, with the MSIX installer requiring20H1+; Windows passkeys require Windows11 and MSIX. iOS/iPadOS18+ and Android12+ with Google Play are the current general mobile requirements; Android passkeys require14+. Linux requires64-bit x86 or ARM and glibc2.31+, with supported distributions including Debian11+, Fedora32+, RHEL/CentOS9+, Ubuntu20.04+ packages or18.04+ Snap. Feature-specific requirements can be higher than the general minimum. Use each platform's separate package; this Mac cask does not install mobile or Windows editions.
Account, cost and license
1Password8 uses a1Password account and subscription service, with individual/family/team/business plans and trial offers subject to current terms. Downloading the app is not a perpetual paid-service entitlement. It is proprietary software, not an open-source password-manager license. Account synchronization and sharing use online services; previously synchronized items can support local access, but setup, synchronization and online sharing require connectivity. Review your organization's recovery, sharing and device policies before storing business credentials.
