About

ThinkRail is a JetBrains InnovationHub project: an agentic IDE built around the pi coding agent and published as open source under Apache-2.0.

How it works

  • A project is any local git repository. Every workspace is a real git worktree with its own branch and working directory, so several agents run in parallel and main stays clean until you merge.
  • The pi agent runs in-process and owns models, skills, compaction and cost. ThinkRail provides the workspace, the editor and the connection between them.
  • Specs are first-class: each module carries a SPEC.md linked into a graph, and an extension gives the agent tools to search, navigate and maintain it.

In the window

  • Monaco editor tabs from the VS Code editor engine, rendered markdown with a source toggle, and a file tree for the active worktree.
  • A live git diff of the workspace branch, so you can review an agent's work as it lands.
  • Real PTY terminals scoped to the worktree.
  • Several agent sessions per workspace with a model picker per session, live token and cost readouts, and Cmd/Ctrl+K to switch sessions.

Who it is for Developers who want to run coding agents on their own repositories and review the results in an IDE rather than a chat panel.

Cost and requirements ThinkRail is free and open source. Using the agent requires git and an authenticated pi provider. The macOS build runs on Apple Silicon with macOS 14 or later; Windows x64, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64 builds are also published.

How to install ThinkRail on Mac

Homebrew installs the app in your Applications folder.

Install without Homebrew

Download the same file Homebrew uses: Install Details

Uninstall ThinkRail and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask thinkrail

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Deep clean (optional)
Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask thinkrail

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.

Questions about ThinkRail

Is ThinkRail safe?

ThinkRail is in Homebrew’s official catalog and has not been disabled. Since September 2026, Homebrew disables apps that fail macOS Gatekeeper checks. When installing, Homebrew checks the download from github.com against its SHA-256 checksum.

Is ThinkRail open source?

ThinkRail’s source code is public on GitHub (JetBrains/thinkrail) under the Apache-2.0 license.

How do I completely uninstall ThinkRail on a Mac?

Run brew uninstall --cask thinkrail. To delete its settings and caches as well, run brew uninstall --zap --cask thinkrail. --zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap. That also deletes 4 files and folders, including ~/Library/Application Support/ai.thinkrail.app.

Does ThinkRail run on Apple silicon (M1 and later) Macs?

Yes, and only there: it does not install on Intel Macs. It needs macOS 14 or later.

Where does ThinkRail store its settings and data?

Its settings are in ~/Library/Preferences/ai.thinkrail.app.plist. Its data is in ~/Library/Application Support/ai.thinkrail.app and ~/.thinkrail. These locations come from Homebrew’s clean-up list.

What is the latest version of ThinkRail?

The latest version is 0.3.0, added to Homebrew on Oct 30, 2026. ThinkRail updates itself; to update it with Homebrew, run brew upgrade --cask --greedy thinkrail.
