About

Mactoy is a native macOS app for two jobs: putting Ventoy on a USB drive, and writing one disk image to a stick. Ventoy has no macOS installer, so the usual workarounds need a second USB stick, a Linux VM or a terminal session. Mactoy partitions the drive, writes the bootloader and formats the data partition from a normal window, then gets out of the way.

Main features

  • Install Ventoy on a USB drive: Mactoy downloads the release, partitions the drive as MBR (GPT is one click away, and drives over 2 TiB always get GPT), writes the bootloader and formats the data partition as exFAT.
  • Update Ventoy in place on a drive that already has it, keeping the ISOs and the /ventoy/ configuration.
  • Flash a raw image (.iso, .img, .img.xz, .img.gz) to a single-boot stick, with a progress bar and drag and drop.
  • Manage an existing Ventoy volume: list, add and remove ISOs without going through Finder.
  • Pick a boot menu theme: 14 community themes with previews, plus your own themes from a .zip, a folder or a theme.txt.
  • Secure Boot toggle on install and update, the same choice Ventoy2Disk offers with -s and -S.
  • A drive holding APFS Time Machine backups is listed but locked until you unlock it for the session.

Who it is for

People who carry several bootable systems on one Ventoy stick, and IT admins who prepare installers for other machines. It also covers the simpler case of writing a single ISO to a stick, which otherwise needs a separate flashing tool.

Requirements

macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs (universal binary). The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. The first time it writes to a drive, Mactoy asks for two macOS permissions: a background item for its privileged helper mactoyd, registered through SMAppService, and Full Disk Access. The helper can be removed automatically after each run.

Uninstall Mactoy and optional data cleanup

Uninstall command
brew uninstall --cask mactoy

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Deep clean (optional)
Uninstall command
brew uninstall --zap --cask mactoy

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left. Back up any data you need first. To keep settings and caches, leave out --zap.
